In Simcoe County at Canada’s largest military training base, CFB Borden is home to almost 1,800 soldiers, sailors, air men and women posted as base staff and instructors with over 15,000 service men and women of all ranks rotating through the base annually for training. To say “thank you” to Canada’s military personnel and to help support their families’ education in a very special way, Georgian International along with local community business leaders, established Operation Hero – a scholarship program that provides members of Canadian Forces Base Borden with the opportunity to receive a scholarship to assist in the funding of their education at Georgian College. This endowed scholarship will help future generations of students achieve their academic dreams. It also honors the sacrifices made by our troops, their spouses and their children and it is an initiative Georgian International is extremely proud to be involved with and supports through corporate philanthropy and volunteerism. Fundraising commenced in 2010, with a goal of reaching $250,000. To date, Operation Hero has raised over $800,000 with the program goal now raised to $1,000,000 and expanded into dozens of schools and dedicated community events, including the Canadian Forces Base Borden Run, an annual 5km,10km and ½ marathon fundraising event held on the military grounds of CFB Borden.
